About '50 shades to grey'|'50 Shades of Grey' is Setting Women Up to Suffer in Love

After               somehow               falling               prey               to               the               "50               Shades               of               Grey"               craze               I've               found               myself               reaching               to               sleazy,               easy               to               read               romance               novels.

One               element               I've               found               central               in               these               novels               are               powerful,               charming,               gorgeous,               but               controlling               men.

While               I'm               far               too               opinionated               and               stubborn               to               ever               get               involved               with               a               control               freak               such               as               Christian               Grey,               I've               found               myself               drawn               to               the               character               type.

Each               of               these               leading               men               is               always               dressed               in               custom               fit               suits               that               still               somehow               manage               to               show               off               their               perfectly               chiseled               physique.

I               began               to               wonder               why               so               many               women               are               so               drawn               to               this               ideal?

What               is               it               about               a               man               in               a               suit               or               tuxedo               that               makes               women,               including               myself,               drawn               to               them?

It               all               goes               back               to               the               symbolic               meaning               behind               the               suit.
In               sociology               we               distinguish               between               two               different               parts               of               culture;               material               and               nonmaterial               culture.

Material               culture               encompasses               tangible               objects               from               furniture               to               clothing.

Non-material               culture               includes               attitudes               and               behaviors               within               a               given               society.

The               symbolic               interactionist               perspective               looks               for               the               meaning               that               people               give               to               objects,               attitudes,               behaviors,               and               other               aspects               of               culture.
So               what               is               it               about               a               suit               that               makes               us               turn               heads?

What               is               it               about               a               man               in               a               suit               that               always               'takes               her               breath               away'               in               a               romance               novel?

It               is               the               symbolic               meaning,               the               illusion               of               success.

Suits               mean               more               than               success;               they               symbolize               professionalism               and               skill               in               the               business               world.

Suits               mean               hard               work               and               dedication.

Suits               demonstrate               an               attempt               to               put               him               together.

We               are               drawn               to               suits               because               we               are               drawn               to               these               qualities               in               men.
It               also               goes               beyond               the               suit.

Women               are               drawn               to               attractive               men,               this               is               no               surprise.

But               why               is               this?

A               well-cared               for               physique               demonstrates               the               ability               of               a               man               to               care               for               himself.

This               signals               that               he               would               then               also               take               good               care               of               a               mate.
Why               then,               do               modern-day               women,               enjoy               the               controlling               nature               of               these               men?

What               meaning               can               we               infer               from               this?

Women               in               2012               are               used               to               calling               the               shots.

In               fact,               recent               studies               have               shown               that               women               make               more               of               the               decisions               in               married               households               than               men.

While               many               of               us               aren't               ready               to               yield               this               power,               many               of               us               wish               for               more               effort               by               our               mates.

After               the               wooing               is               over,               how               many               men               still               plan               dates?

Many               of               us               are               left               with               the               'Where               do               you               want               to               eat?'               questions               on               date               night.

Sometimes,               believe               it               or               not,               even               us               feminists               like               to               give               up               control.
So               what               is               the               importance               of               the               symbolic               meaning               of               Christian               Grey?

It               tells               men               that               women               are               still               attracted               to               strong,               successful,               well-dressed               men               who               can               take               control               of               a               situation.

Or,               if               nothing               else,               a               man               who               can               look               and               play               the               part,               even               for               the               evening.
